Alanya City Council Establishes Akdeniz Union

As a result of the meeting hosted by the Alanya City Council on April 18-19, 2026, the Union of Akdeniz City Councils was officially established. At the meeting, which brought together the council representatives of fifteen different cities in the region, the Alanya City Council was unanimously elected as the Founding Term President. This initiative, which was implemented with common sense and the will to cooperate, registered the city's leading role in local democracy and civil society collaborations.

Wide Participation in the Founding Meeting

The historical summit was attended by Alanya City Council President Nurhan Özcan, Alanya Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik, Advisor to the President Faruk Konukçu, Secretary General Haydar Uyar and executive board members. Speaking at the event, Faruk Konukçu drew attention to the importance of strong cooperation between local governments and city councils and stated that the municipality will fully support this process. Adana, Tarsus, Burdur, Aksu, Kepez, İskenderun, Arsuz, Anamur, Çukurova, Seyhan, Ceyhan, Bucak, Toroslar and Mezitli city councils participated in the meeting. With the founding declaration accepted with the signatures of the participants, a common roadmap was determined for the production of regional projects.

Building a New Local Governance Culture

The founding executive board members of the union formed; Burdur was elected from the councils of Tarsus, Adana, İskenderun, Anamur, Seyhan, Ceyhan, Çukurova and Kepez. Evaluating the process, President Nurhan Özcan stated that they have built a horizontal organization model and said, "This structure is not a central administrator; It is the product of an understanding that thinks and produces together. Our aim is to strengthen local democracy in practice by establishing a strong solidarity network." At the end of his evaluation, Nurhan Özcan thanked Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik and all other mayors and council presidents for their contribution to the process.
