Measures to be taken against the risk of fire, which increases with the rise in temperatures and the drying of the air, were discussed in the Commission on Combating Forest Fires, which was convened under the chairmanship of Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin. The meeting held at Antalya Regional Directorate of Forestry was attended by Deputy Secretary General of the Metropolitan Municipality Çiğdem Hacıoğlu, Deputy Governor Salih Yüce, Provincial Police Chief Sabit Akın Zaimoğlu, Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Ahmet Kavukcu, 3rd Infantry Training Brigade Commander Ayhan Ocak, Regional Forestry Director Kemal Kayıran, AFAD Provincial Director Necmi Erçin and representatives of public institutions attended. At the meeting, strategic steps to be taken to protect the city's forest assets were determined.

New Prevention Plan is Active

In Antalya, the province with the largest forest area in Türkiye, the "Forest Fire Prevention Plan" is being put into effect against the risks brought by climate change. Governor Şahin stated that early warning systems and awareness activities will be increased to the maximum level to protect a total of 1.1 million hectares of forest area. Reminding that the number of fires and loss of space were minimized last year thanks to inter-institutional coordination, Şahin emphasized that this year they set out with the aim of preventing fires before they even start.

Technological and Strategic Preparations Have Been Completed

As part of the rapid response capacity to fires, land vehicles were deployed at 143 points across the province. While 36 of the 42 observation towers were equipped with IP cameras, UAV systems, 8 helicopters and 3 aircraft were made ready for aerial monitoring. It was announced that risky areas were pinpointed thanks to the heat maps created with the data of the last five years. The commission stated that on risky days, a state of alert will be established by communicating instantly with all residents of the region, from headmen to farmers.
