Alanya Working at the Training and Research Hospital Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Faculty of Medicine, Head of Internal Medicine Department and Institution Education Officer Prof. Dr. Şakir Özgür Keşkek warned against diabetic retinopathy, a serious complication of diabetes that affects the retina layer of the eye. Keşkek emphasized that early diagnosis and regular retinal scans play a critical role in preventing permanent vision loss and blindness.

Diabetic Retinopathy Progresses Silently

Noting that the disease often progresses without showing symptoms, Keşkek stated that patients may not experience any vision complaints for a long time. Stating that serious damage develops in the retinal vessels during this process, Keşkek said that vascular structure disorders due to chronic hyperglycemia form the basis of this damage. He added that high blood sugar can lead to vascular occlusions over time and abnormal vascular formations in advanced stages, causing serious vision loss.

Healthy Life Habits Should Be Maintained

Keşkek, who is also a Board Member of the Clinical Endocrinology and Diabetes Association, said that in order to protect against the disease, not only blood sugar; He stated that factors such as hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemia and smoking should also be controlled. Reminding that those diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes should have a detailed eye examination immediately, and those with Type 1 diabetes within the first 5 years, Keşkek stated that vision loss can be prevented to a large extent with a multidisciplinary approach.
