Blue Antalya Summit for the Mediterranean

The Türkiye Plastic Waste Workshop Antalya Coordination Meeting, organized under the auspices of Antalya Governorship and under the coordination of the Zero Waste Foundation, was held to determine the environmental strategies of the city. At the meeting held before the big workshop to be held in Istanbul between 31 August and 1 September, solution proposals for reducing plastic waste at the source, recycling infrastructure and protecting coastal ecosystems were discussed.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, Zero Waste Foundation President Samed Ağırbaş, Environmental Management General Manager Fatih Turan, Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Provincial Director Ufuk Ağdak, Zero Waste Applications Department Head Ekrem Yıldırım, Waste Management Department Head Sabriye Ayhan and Antalya Blue Mediterranean Initiative Project Coordinator Ebru Şahin, as well as many institution representatives and academicians attended the meeting.

Integrated Combat on Land and at Sea

Samed Ağırbaş stated that the fight against plastic pollution should be addressed with its dimensions both on land and at sea, and that local experiences in the city are of critical importance for the global climate agenda. Emphasizing that Antalya has a special environmental position with its coasts, bays and tourism economy, Ağırbaş stated that the common mind that emerged here will be carried to the workshop in Istanbul and then to the COP31 process.

Blue Homeland and Global Environmental Vision

Governor Şahin, drawing attention to the negative effects of plastic waste on the seas and tourism, emphasized that the problem is a common problem that concerns the entire Mediterranean basin and global oceans. Stating that the declaration of Fethiye-Kaş Marine National Park is a historical step in terms of Blue Homeland efforts, Governor Şahin expressed his gratitude for the leadership provided to the zero waste vision and marine protected areas.
