Emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, Dr. Türkay stated that skin cancer is among the most common types of cancer in the world, and especially melanoma is the most aggressive and deadly skin cancer. Stating that the disease is visible to the naked eye and the cure rate is very high in the first stage, Türkay stated that if the symptoms are neglected, the cancer has the potential to spread to the lymph nodes and internal organs in a short time.
Sun Rays and Risk Factors
Türkay stated that the biggest cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and solarium, and said that severe sunburns experienced during childhood and adolescence increase the risk exponentially in later ages. It was stated that individuals with fair skin, colored eyes, more than fifty moles on their body, people who blush easily in the sun and a family history of skin cancer are at much higher risk.
Prevention Ways and Mole Tracking
Explaining the methods of protection from the harmful effects of the sun, Türkay noted that one should not stay under direct sun between 10.00 and 16.00, when UV rays are most intense. Emphasizing that wide-brimmed hats, protective glasses and clothing should be preferred, the expert reminded that high factor sun protection creams should be used regularly, even in cloudy weather. Stating that individuals should closely monitor the changes in their bodies, Türkay underlined that it is vital to consult a specialist without delay in case of deformity, color change, growth, itching or bleeding in moles.
