Potato Support for Beneficial Insect Production from Antalya Metropolitan Municipality

Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Agricultural Services Department continues environmentally friendly agricultural practices in line with local development goals. With the joint work of Rural Development and Cooperatives and Plant Production and Education branch directorates, contribution is made to the biological control against mealybug pests in citrus and pomegranate orchards. In this context, trial production of granola type potatoes, which constitute the most efficient substrate in the mass production of predatory and parasitoid beneficial insects, was carried out in Korkuteli Kırkpınar District.

The harvest of potatoes planted with the seed support provided to farmers has been completed. This study aims to introduce, grow and disseminate this potato species in the region. The products obtained will be used in the process of feeding and breeding beneficial insects.

Full Support from Producers to Natural Production

Speaking at the harvest study held in Korkuteli Kırkpınar District, Metropolitan Municipality Agricultural Services Department Agricultural Engineer Ömür Yılmaz stated that they produced beneficial insects with their own means in municipal facilities. Yılmaz said, "In this context, we use granola type potatoes, which have high credit for the proliferation of beneficial insects. Within the scope of our local development goals, the harvest of the potatoes whose seeds we provide in our Kırkpınar neighborhood has started. We aim to multiply the harvested potatoes and include different farmers in production, increase potato production in the region, and purchase potatoes directly from the producers without providing seed support in the future."

Ramadan Tuğ, Chairman of Korkuteli Kırkpınar District Agricultural Development Cooperative, stated that 400 kilograms of potato seeds were donated in line with the request of the municipality. Tuğ said, "We planted the seeds given to us and made a completely natural production without using any pesticides. We harvested approximately 2 tons of potatoes from this planting. I am thinking of planting them in the coming years and will recommend other farmers to plant this type."
